Curly Hair: The Beauty, The Struggle

Updated: Jun 6, 2023

If you have curly hair,

you know the drill.

Some days it's a curly, bouncy masterpiece. Other days, it's a frizzy, poofy party. Curly hair is beautiful, but it requires special maintenance.

The good news is that there are a lot of tips and tricks that can help you get the most out of your curly hair. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

In order to evaluate if you’re experiencing an issue with your hair, you must first have a good understanding of how your hair behaves. - Aeleise & Aishia, Founders of Black Girl Curls.

Tip #1..... Embrace your curls!

The first step to having great curly hair is to embrace your curls. Don't try to straighten them out, or brush them into submission. Instead, work with your curls to create a look that is both beautiful and manageable. Let them live their life.

Find the right products for YOU.

The middle tips should go into a bit more detail, explain more. Keep them short and to-the-point. E.g., if you're writing a post about how to blog, you can write something like: "Decide how often you want to blog. Be realistic about it. Think you can blog twice a month? Commit to once a month and stick to it."

"Curly hair is not a trend, it's a lifestyle. And using the right products and techniques can mean the difference between a good hair day and a great hair day." – Lorraine Massey

Protect your hair at night.

If you have curly hair, it's important to protect it at night. Invest in a satin pillowcase, or wrap your hair in a silk scarf, or bonnet. This will help prevent frizz and keep your curls looking fresh.

Don't over-wash.

Over-washing can strip your hair of natural oils and make it frizzier. Aim to wash your hair once or twice a week, and use a sulfate-free shampoo to keep your curls healthy. Clarify your curls 1-2x a month as needed. Un-doo Goo is a great one to try.

Get regular trims.

Regular trims can help keep your curls healthy and prevent split ends. If you want to grow your hair out, don't be afraid to trim it a little bit at a time. Each of our stylists at Studio Within have been highly trained in different cutting techniques for wavy to curly hair. As a curly certified salon, we pride ourselves in our experience and expertise on various hair textures; from waves to tight coils!

Experiment with different styles.

Finally, don't be afraid to experiment with different styles. From bantu knots to twist outs, there are a ton of different styles that you can try to show off your curls.

Please remember, curly hair is both beautiful and unique. With a little bit of love and care, you can make the most of your curls and enjoy beautiful, bouncy hair every single day.
